2012 Season Wrap-Up
In 2012 the Lady Eagles had our most successful season yet, doubling our ranks and achieving a second place finish at Nationals in Mason, OH in 2012. Throughout the season the Lady Eagles held several ladies-only Ausball scrimmages to introduce more women to the game, and also played several proper footy games against the NY Lady Magpies and the Boston Lady Demons. Making the cross-over from Ausball to proper footy for the first time were Cailin Deal, Alex Mims, Emily Ricotta, and Alice Zetina, who impressed us all with their fearless playing and enthusiasm for the game. Several members of the team, Eileen Geoghegan, Judith Stein (captain), and Karen Stablein, also represented the Lady Eagles on the women’s US National Team in their victory over Canada at the 49th Parallel Cup in August in Dublin, Ohio. Teaming up with Boston at Nationals in October, the Lady Demon/Eagles successfully banded together despite never having trained together and learned each other’s names on the spot. On the first day of competition they came away with a win and a loss and a ticket to the semi-finals the next day. On the second day of competition, after squeaking by Calgary by 2 points in the semi-final, the Lady Eagles faced a tough challenge in the finals against returning champions, Denver Bulldogs. In howling wind and driving rain, the Lady Eagles/Demons executed their defensive game plan to perfection under coach Denis Ryan, but ultimately Denver was too strong and secured another championship. The Lady Eagles are looking forward to another season of recruiting and growth so that we can field a full team at this year’s national tournament in Austin, TX.
